1 John 2:14
“I have written to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”
What does 1 John 2:14 mean?
John is speaking to different groups within his community, and notice what he affirms about each. The fathers, he says, know God intimately through long relationship and experience. The young men possess something equally valuable: strength and the word of God living in them, which has already enabled them to resist evil. What's beautiful here is that John isn't ranking spiritual maturity or suggesting one group is more important than the other. He's recognizing that people at different life stages bring different gifts to faith. Whether you're someone with decades of walking with God or someone newly strengthened by God's word, you have something real and meaningful. The young men's victory over evil isn't small or preliminary—it's genuine overcoming, evidence that God's word actively works in them.
