What does 1 John 1:8 mean?
John is addressing a tension that runs through all our lives: the gap between who we think we are and who we actually are. In the first century, some people in the church were claiming spiritual perfection, as if they'd moved beyond the reality of their own flaws. John cuts through this gently but clearly, saying that denying our capacity to sin isn't honesty or holiness, it's just another way of fooling ourselves. The encouraging part is that John isn't saying this to shame us. He's clearing away the pretense so we can actually meet God as we really are. When we stop performing and admit what's true about ourselves, we leave room for the truth of God's grace to actually work in us. This is the beginning of real change, not the end of it.
