What does 1 John 1:6 mean?
John is calling out a hard truth: we can't genuinely follow Jesus while living in a way that contradicts everything he stands for. "Walking in darkness" means continuing patterns of sin, selfishness, or harm, not just making occasional mistakes that everyone makes. What makes this verse so honest is that it assumes we'll be tempted to claim closeness to God while living however we want. John says that doesn't work. Real fellowship with Jesus changes how we actually live, even if that change is messy and incomplete. If our faith hasn't touched our choices and character at all, then something isn't connecting. This isn't meant to shame you if you're struggling or falling short, which is the human condition. It's meant to invite you toward integrity: let your faith and your life point the same direction, and be honest with yourself and God about the gap when they don't.
