What does 1 Corinthians 7:31 mean?
Paul is reminding us that our time here is temporary, so we should hold our possessions and circumstances lightly. It's not that enjoying food, relationships, or work is wrong, but that clinging to them as if they'll last forever—or as if they're the source of our deepest meaning—will leave us empty when they inevitably change. The "mode of this world" he's talking about is the way things currently work, the systems and satisfactions we see around us, and all of it is fading. Living with this reality in mind actually frees us to engage with life more fully and genuinely, without the anxiety of trying to hold onto what can't be held.
