What does 1 Corinthians 3:5 mean?
Paul is gently reminding the Corinthian church that spiritual leaders aren't the point, even the impressive ones. The church had split into rival factions, with some claiming loyalty to Paul and others to Apollos (a gifted teacher who had also ministered there), as if these leaders were competing celebrities. Paul's question cuts through that: what are we really, after all? He describes both himself and Apollos simply as servants, or "ministers," through whom God worked. The real power and growth came through the Lord's work, not their personalities or eloquence. This is freeing for everyone involved, because it means your faith doesn't rest on any person's charisma or authority, but on God himself. It also takes the pressure off leaders to be superhuman or to build personal kingdoms, which is a relief if you've ever felt that weight or watched others collapse under it.
