What does 1 Corinthians 3:23 mean?
Paul is reminding the Corinthians (and us) of a simple chain of belonging that should settle a lot of anxious questions. You belong to Christ, which means you're not ultimately owned by any human leader, political system, or cultural pressure, no matter how impressive those things seem. And Christ himself belongs to God, so there's a perfect flow of authority and love all the way back to the source. What makes this so freeing is that it removes us from the exhausting game of trying to please everyone or prove ourselves to various powers. If you're Christ's, then your identity and worth aren't up for debate or negotiation. This belonged in the middle of a letter about church divisions and competing loyalties, but it speaks just as clearly to anyone today wondering whose approval they really need or who they ultimately answer to.
