1 Corinthians 2:12

But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God.

What does 1 Corinthians 2:12 mean?

Paul is drawing a contrast here between two very different sources of understanding. When we follow Christ, we receive God's Spirit rather than adopting the world's default way of thinking, which operates on competition, self-protection, and measuring our worth by what we accumulate or achieve. This divine Spirit gives us the capacity to recognize and truly absorb the gifts God has already given us, freely and without condition. For many of us, especially those struggling or feeling like we're never enough, this is deeply reassuring. We don't have to earn God's favor or figure everything out on our own. The Spirit helps us actually receive and believe in the grace that's already ours, which is often the hardest part.
