1 Corinthians 2:11
“For who among men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God, except God’s Spirit.”
What does 1 Corinthians 2:11 mean?
Paul is making a simple but profound comparison: just as only your own inner spirit truly knows your deepest thoughts and motivations, only God's Spirit can truly know God's inner nature and purposes. We can't understand the deepest things about someone else just by observing them from the outside, and we certainly can't grasp who God really is through human logic and effort alone. This matters because Paul is writing to people who felt spiritually confused, maybe even inadequate in their faith. He's reassuring them that understanding God isn't about being intellectually clever or having the right education. It requires something relational and intimate: the Holy Spirit working within us to reveal what God is actually like. It's an invitation to stop trying so hard to figure everything out on your own and instead to open yourself to God's own Spirit doing that revealing work in you.
