What does 1 Corinthians 15:56 mean?
Death feels like the ultimate enemy, and Paul is explaining why it has such a grip on us: sin is what gives death its terrible sting. Without sin, death would lose much of its power to terrify us. The law itself, while good and right, actually strengthens sin's hold because it shows us clearly where we've fallen short, making us acutely aware of our guilt and our need for grace. This verse isn't meant to make us despair, though. Paul writes this in a chapter celebrating Christ's resurrection, which ultimately defeats both sin and death. Understanding where death's real power comes from helps us see why we need something beyond ourselves to overcome it.
