1 Corinthians 13:8
“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.”
What does 1 Corinthians 13:8 mean?
Paul is describing what lasts and what doesn't in God's kingdom. Prophecies, languages, and knowledge are all valuable spiritual gifts, but they're temporary tools for this present age. When we're fully in God's presence, we won't need someone to speak God's word for us anymore, we won't face language barriers keeping us apart, and we won't have incomplete understanding anymore. But love isn't like those gifts, because love reflects God's very nature, which never changes and never ends. Even in heaven, love will still be the deepest reality binding us to God and to each other. This is meant to comfort us, reminding us that the hardest thing to build in our relationships now, the sacrifice and faithfulness love asks of us, is actually the most eternal investment we can make.
