What does 1 Corinthians 13:4 mean?
Love isn't in a hurry, and it doesn't push people away with harshness or indifference. When someone we care about struggles or takes time to grow, love waits rather than demands. Kindness flows naturally from that patience, meeting people where they are instead of where we wish they'd be. The verse then names what love actively *doesn't* do: it doesn't resent someone else's good fortune, doesn't need to advertise itself or prove its worth, and doesn't look down on others from some imagined high ground. These might seem like small things, but they're often where love breaks down in real relationships. We can be patient one moment and then envious the next, or kind to someone's face while secretly proud of our own superiority. Paul is describing something far more consistent and humble, a love that's genuinely glad for others and secure enough not to need constant validation.
