What does 1 Corinthians 13:3 mean?
Paul is saying that even the most impressive acts of sacrifice mean nothing if they're not rooted in genuine love. He's addressing a tension we all feel: it's possible to do all the "right" things for all the wrong reasons, whether we're seeking praise, proving something to ourselves, or just going through the motions out of obligation. The point hits especially hard because he's naming the most extreme examples he can think of. Total generosity, total self-sacrifice, and it would still be empty without love at the center. This is a humbling reminder that our motivations matter just as much as our actions, and that doing good for show or self-satisfaction leaves us spiritually bankrupt, even if everyone around us calls us generous or noble.
