1 Corinthians 12:17
βIf the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be?β
What does 1 Corinthians 12:17 mean?
Paul is using the human body as a picture of how the church works together. If every single person in a community had the same gift or role, the community would be incomplete and unable to function well, just like a body made entirely of eyes couldn't hear or smell anything important. He's making the point that our different abilities and callings aren't weaknesses to feel bad about, they're exactly what we need. When you bring what you uniquely have to offer alongside others doing the same, the whole community becomes strong and healthy in ways that wouldn't be possible if everyone tried to be the same.
