“When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me.””
What does 1 Corinthians 11:24 mean?
Jesus was establishing what we now call Communion or the Lord's Supper, inviting his closest friends to share bread with him the night before his death. By calling the bread his body "broken for you," he was pointing ahead to his crucifixion, the ultimate sacrifice he was about to make for humanity's sake. When he asked them to repeat this ritual "in memory of me," he wasn't just asking them to remember a nice moment, but to keep returning to the heart of what his death meant: an act of love and redemption offered freely for everyone. For nearly 2,000 years, believers have gathered around tables to do exactly this, finding in those simple elements of bread and wine a way to reconnect with Jesus' deepest gift and commitment to us.
