1 Corinthians 10:23

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.

What does 1 Corinthians 10:23 mean?

Paul is reminding us that just because we have freedom in Christ doesn't mean every choice serves us well. He's quoting back something the Corinthians apparently believed, then gently pushing back: yes, you're free, but freedom without wisdom becomes self-destructive. The question shifts from "Am I allowed?" to "Does this actually help me become who I'm meant to be?" and "Does this strengthen my community, or does it tear it down?" Sometimes the most loving choice isn't the one that asserts our rights, but the one that considers how our freedom affects those around us. It's a beautiful tension between personal liberty and shared life together.
