What does 1 Corinthians 10:2 mean?

Paul is reminding the Corinthians that their spiritual ancestors, the Israelites fleeing Egypt, experienced something like baptism when they passed through the Red Sea with the cloud of God's presence protecting them. Just as baptism marks entry into the Christian faith, that miraculous crossing marked the Israelites' commitment to follow God and escape slavery. Paul uses this parallel to show that the early church wasn't inventing something entirely new, but participating in God's ancient pattern of calling and protecting his people. He's encouraging his readers to see themselves as part of a long story of faith, not isolated believers starting from scratch.
