1 Chronicles 3:15
βThe sons of Josiah: the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, and the fourth Shallum.β
What does 1 Chronicles 3:15 mean?
Josiah was one of Judah's most faithful kings, known for his reforms and devotion to God. This verse simply lists his four sons, though their lives would take very different paths. Jehoiakim and Zedekiah both became kings themselves, while Shallum (also called Jehoahaz) had a brief, troubled reign. The order here reflects birth order rather than royal succession, which is why the firstborn Johanan doesn't appear prominently in the kingdom's history. Understanding that these were real people with real struggles helps us see that faithfulness in one generation doesn't automatically guarantee it in the next.
