Zephaniah 3:18
“I will remove those who grieve about the appointed feasts from you. They are a burden and a reproach to you.”
What does Zephaniah 3:18 mean?
God is speaking here to Jerusalem about lifting a weight that has settled on the community. Some people have become so discouraged or faithless that they can no longer celebrate the festivals meant to bring joy and remember God's goodness, and their sadness has become a drag on everyone else. The promise isn't harsh, even though it sounds stern. God is saying he will take away the heaviness, the people stuck in despair who can no longer participate in hope. This comes after chapters of judgment, and Zephaniah is beginning to turn toward restoration. The removal of those who've given up to despair is actually God clearing away what's keeping the community from healing and renewed celebration. If you're reading this in a hard season, you might hear something different: sometimes we need to let go of the voices, maybe even internal ones, that tell us joy is impossible or that celebrating anything is pointless. God wants to restore your capacity to experience good things again.
