What does Zephaniah 2:12 mean?

Zephaniah was a prophet who warned the nations around Judah that God's judgment was coming, and he wasn't sparing anyone from accountability. Cush (modern-day Ethiopia and Sudan) represents one of the powerful kingdoms of that time, and this harsh pronouncement means that even the strongest and most distant nations wouldn't escape the consequences of turning away from God. The word is challenging to read, especially when we're already struggling, but it carries an important truth: God's standards apply everywhere and to everyone, with no exceptions based on power, wealth, or distance. There's actually comfort in that universal accountability, because it means God isn't playing favorites or ignoring injustice anywhere on earth.
