Zechariah 9:13
“For indeed I bend Judah as a bow for me. I have filled the bow with Ephraim; and I will stir up your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece, and will make you like the sword of a mighty man.”
What does Zechariah 9:13 mean?
Zechariah uses vivid military language here to describe God's coming defense of his people. He pictures Judah and Ephraim (the northern and southern kingdoms, or their descendants) as a bow and arrow in God's hands, ready to be deployed as instruments of his purpose. The reference to Greece points toward the future conflicts that would actually come centuries later when Greek empires threatened the Jewish people. The deeper promise beneath the imagery is that God will mobilize his people and give them strength and victory when they face overwhelming odds. Even though this language sounds harsh to modern ears, it was meant to be deeply comforting to people who felt powerless and were anxious about their future. God is saying, in effect: "I have you. You are not abandoned. I will act decisively on your behalf."
