Zechariah 8:19
“Yahweh of Armies says: “The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh, and tenth months shall be for the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts. Therefore love truth and peace.””
What does Zechariah 8:19 mean?
After centuries of exile and hardship, God is telling the Jewish people that their days of mourning are ending. Those fasts they observed to remember their suffering and separation from Jerusalem will transform into celebrations, because restoration is coming. The shift from fasting to feasting symbolizes how God turns grief into joy when his people return home. The final command, "love truth and peace," isn't separate from this promise. God is saying that joy rooted in his restoration should naturally lead us to pursue honesty and reconciliation with one another. When we've experienced God's faithfulness and renewal, we're freed to live with integrity and to seek peace instead of holding onto bitterness. It's an invitation to let hope reshape not just our emotions, but how we treat each other.
