Zechariah 7:5
““Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month for these seventy years, did you at all fast to me, really to me?”
What does Zechariah 7:5 mean?
God is asking the people a hard but honest question through the prophet Zechariah: Were your religious practices actually for me, or were they just going through the motions? The Israelites had been fasting and mourning during their exile to remember their loss and their sins, but God wants them to examine their hearts. Sometimes we can do all the right external things, say all the right words, and follow all the rituals without actually turning toward God with genuine devotion and desire to change. This verse invites us to ask ourselves the same question: when we pray, worship, or practice our faith, are we truly connecting with God, or are we just fulfilling obligations out of habit?
