Zechariah 7:10

What does Zechariah 7:10 mean?
God's concern here cuts straight to how we treat people who are most vulnerable and easily overlooked. Widows, orphans, immigrants, and those living in poverty were among the most defenseless in ancient society, with few legal protections or family networks to support them. The command isn't just about avoiding outright cruelty, but about refusing to take advantage of their vulnerability for our own gain. The second part adds something equally important: even when no one would know, we're called to guard our own hearts against wishing harm on others. Evil thoughts toward a brother (meaning anyone in our community) matter because they shape who we become and often lead to harmful actions. God cares not just about what we do, but about the spirit we cultivate inside ourselves.
