What does Zechariah 7:1 mean?

This verse marks a specific moment when God spoke to the prophet Zechariah during the reign of King Darius, roughly 520 BCE. At this point in his ministry, Zechariah was receiving messages meant to encourage the Jewish people who had recently returned from exile and were rebuilding their temple. The careful dating shows that God's word came at particular times and seasons, not randomly, which might have reassured people that the Lord was actively engaged with them during this difficult rebuilding period. What follows in the next chapter is actually a question from the community about whether they should continue fasting during certain months now that the exile was over, and God's answer through Zechariah addresses what really matters in their worship and obedience.
