Zechariah 3:4
“He answered and spoke to those who stood before him, saying, “Take the filthy garments off him.” To him he said, “Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with rich clothing.””
What does Zechariah 3:4 mean?
In this vision, the angel Gabriel is addressing Joshua the high priest, who stands accused before God in tattered, soiled clothes that represent his shame and sin. The image is striking: even the person meant to lead others spiritually has been weighed down by guilt and unworthiness. But then comes a complete reversal. God doesn't lecture or punish. Instead, He orders the filthy garments stripped away and promises to dress Joshua in fine, clean clothes instead. This is God saying: your guilt is removed, your record is cleared, and you're being restored to wholeness and dignity. The passage speaks to something many of us desperately need to hear, especially when we're carrying heavy shame or feeling disqualified by our past. God doesn't ask us to clean ourselves up first or prove we're worthy of help. He simply removes what's been holding us down and gives us new standing, treating us as if we're valuable and clean all over again.
