Zechariah 13:7
““Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is close to me,” says Yahweh of Armies. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn my hand against the little ones.”
What does Zechariah 13:7 mean?
This is one of the Old Testament's most mysterious and troubling prophecies, one that Jesus himself quoted when he sensed his arrest was imminent. God speaks of judgment coming against a shepherd he calls "the man who is close to me," and when that shepherd is struck down, the flock scatters in panic and confusion. For centuries, Jewish and Christian readers have puzzled over these words. In Jesus' time, he applied them to himself, suggesting they foretold his coming suffering and the way his followers would scatter when he was arrested. The image captures something deeply human: how fragile communities can be, how easily fear can disperse those bound together by one person's presence. If you're reading this in a difficult season, it's worth knowing that even in this dark passage, the scattering isn't presented as final or permanent. The shepherd's striking down becomes, in Christian understanding, the very thing that ultimately gathers people back together in a new and deeper way. Sometimes in Scripture, things must break apart before they can be remade.
