What does Titus 3:5 mean?
This verse speaks directly to something many of us wrestle with: the nagging feeling that we need to earn our way into God's favor through good behavior. Paul is saying that's backwards. Our salvation doesn't come from our own efforts or moral achievements, no matter how hard we try or how good we become. Instead, it flows entirely from God's mercy, which reaches us completely undeserved and unearned. The "washing of regeneration" points to baptism as a sign of being made new, while the "renewing by the Holy Spirit" describes the actual inner transformation that God works in us. The key comfort here is that this newness and change come from God's work, not ours. We're not saving ourselves through determination or discipline. We're invited into a rescue that's already been accomplished, where the Spirit continuously works to reshape us from the inside out.
