What does Titus 2:5 mean?
Paul writes here to shape how Christian women live so that outsiders won't have reason to reject the gospel. In the first century, women who neglected their households or showed disrespect to their husbands would have scandalized their communities in ways that reflected badly on the fledgling church. Paul isn't saying women exist only for domestic life, but rather that integrity in these relationships matters for how people perceive faith itself. The phrase "that God's word may not be blasphemed" is the key: Paul cares most about whether people will listen to the Christian message at all. When believers live in ways that contradict cultural expectations (whether those expectations were first-century or modern), it can become a stumbling block for those trying to understand who Jesus is.
