“Boaz said to the elders, and to all the people, “You are witnesses today, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi.”
What does Ruth 4:9 mean?
Boaz is making a public declaration before the town elders and community, formally announcing his purchase of the family land and his commitment to care for Naomi. This was how legal agreements worked in ancient Israel, without written contracts, so witnesses were essential. He's being completely transparent about what he's doing and on what terms, which shows his integrity and protects everyone involved, especially Naomi. By doing this openly and deliberately, Boaz is honoring both the dead men's memory and the living widow's dignity.
