“Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat down there. Behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by. He said to him, “Come over here, friend, and sit down!” He came over, and sat down.”
What does Ruth 4:1 mean?
Boaz is about to settle a legal matter that will affect Ruth's future, and he does it in the most public place in town: the city gate, where important business was conducted and witnesses gathered. He spots the relative who technically has first claim to Ruth and her family's land, and he respectfully invites him to sit down for a conversation. This quiet scene captures something beautiful about integrity: Boaz could have simply married Ruth and nobody would have blamed him, but instead he's following the proper procedures and giving the other man a fair chance to do the right thing. It shows us that doing what's honest matters more than doing what's easy, even when nobody would know the difference.
