What does Ruth 3:12 mean?
Boaz is being honest with Ruth about his feelings and intentions, but he's also respecting the customs and laws of his time. In ancient Israel, a man had legal obligations to a relative's widow, but those obligations went in order of closeness. Boaz is acknowledging that while he cares for Ruth and wants to help her, there's technically someone else who has the first right (and first responsibility) to marry her and restore her family's standing. This moment shows real integrity. Rather than pursuing Ruth secretly or ignoring the one with prior claim, Boaz does the right thing, even though it means delaying what he wants. He's essentially saying: "I care about you, but I care about doing this the right way even more." It's a reminder that sometimes honoring others and following through on what's right matters more than getting what we want immediately.
