Ruth 1:15
“She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.””
What does Ruth 1:15 mean?
Naomi is gently (or perhaps urgently) telling Ruth to turn back and rejoin her own people in Moab rather than continue following her into poverty and uncertainty in Israel. After Ruth's husband died, both Ruth and her sister-in-law Orpah were free to leave the grieving widow behind, but this moment shows Naomi releasing them from obligation out of love. Naomi assumes Ruth, as a foreigner, would naturally want to return to her own community, her family gods, and the life she knew before tragedy struck. What makes this exchange so powerful is what happens next: Ruth refuses, choosing instead to stay with Naomi and eventually finding her way into God's people and God's story.
