Ruth 1:12
“Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons;”
What does Ruth 1:12 mean?
Naomi is speaking to her daughters-in-law Ruth and Orpah after her husband and sons have died, and she's urging them to return to their own families where they might remarry and find security. She's saying she's past childbearing years, so even if she somehow found a husband tonight, she couldn't give them the sons who would become their security and status in that culture. What sounds like hopelessness to us was actually Naomi's honest assessment of her situation, and she was trying to spare these young women from being tied to her struggling circumstances. Her words come from a place of care, even though they're heavy with grief and the weight of not knowing what comes next.
