What does Romans 8:36 mean?
Paul is quoting Psalm 44 here to remind the Roman church that following Jesus doesn't promise comfort or safety in this world. The psalmist describes God's people being handed over to death continually, treated like sheep led to slaughter, yet the psalm holds onto faith that God hasn't abandoned them. By bringing up this ancient prayer, Paul is saying to early Christians facing real persecution: this pattern of suffering for your faith is nothing new, and it doesn't mean God has forgotten you.
