Romans 8:15
“For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!””
What does Romans 8:15 mean?
When we come to faith, we're not stepping into a relationship built on terror or earning our way through perfect behavior. Instead, we're adopted into God's family as beloved children, free from the anxiety that we might be cast out if we stumble. That shift from fear-based obedience to secure belonging changes everything about how we approach God. The word "Abba" was an intimate, everyday term for father in Jesus's own language, similar to calling someone "Dad" today. Paul is saying that through the Spirit's work in us, we can approach God with that same closeness and confidence that a child has with a loving parent. We're not slaves walking on eggshells, but sons and daughters who belong.
