What does Romans 7:5 mean?

Paul is describing what life looked like before knowing Christ, when people were trying to follow God's law from the outside in, without the Spirit's help transforming their hearts. The law itself isn't bad, but when we're spiritually disconnected from God, knowing the rules can actually make us more aware of our desires to break them, like a "don't touch" sign that makes you want to touch it even more. This creates a painful cycle where we end up doing the very things we know are wrong, producing spiritual death rather than life. The good news is that Paul is setting up his point about freedom, which comes not from willpower alone but from being united with Christ through faith.
