Romans 7:15

For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.

What does Romans 7:15 mean?

Paul is describing something deeply relatable: that gap between who we want to be and how we actually act. He's not saying he's confused about right and wrong, but rather that even when he knows what's good, he finds himself doing the opposite anyway. It's that frustrating experience of having good intentions but struggling to follow through, or knowing better yet still making the choice you regret. This honesty is actually comforting because Paul isn't pretending to be perfect. He's speaking from the middle of real human struggle, which means his later point (that grace meets us in this very place) lands with real weight. If you've ever felt disappointed in yourself or trapped in a pattern you hate, you're not alone in that experience, and Paul's vulnerability here gives permission to acknowledge it honestly.
