What does Romans 6:8 mean?

Paul is saying that when we trust Jesus, we're spiritually joined to his death and resurrection. Just as Christ died and then rose to new life, those who belong to him share in that same movement: we die to our old way of living (our sin and self-centeredness) and we rise to a completely new kind of existence with him. The "if" here isn't expressing doubt, but rather stating what's true for believers, followed by the confident hope that flows from it. This passage offers real comfort: our physical deaths aren't the end of the story, because we're already united with someone who conquered death itself.
