Romans 5:7
“For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die.”
What does Romans 5:7 mean?
This verse captures something true about human nature: we rarely sacrifice our lives for someone merely good or morally upright. But when someone is truly righteous in a deeper sense, loved and honored, we sometimes find ourselves willing to give everything. Paul uses this observation to set up his next point, which is that Christ's death for us is even more stunning, because he died not for the worthy, but for sinners. The contrast makes his love look extraordinary by comparison, not because we're deserving, but because his sacrifice breaks all the normal rules of how love typically works.
