Romans 5:14
“Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.”
What does Romans 5:14 mean?
Paul is tracing how death spread through humanity starting with Adam's choice to disobey God. He's saying that even people who came after Adam but before Moses received the law—people whose specific sins were different from Adam's original act of rebellion—still experienced death. This shows that death itself became a power ruling over all people, not just as punishment for individual choices, but as a consequence of humanity's broken relationship with God that began with Adam. The last phrase points forward to Jesus, suggesting that Adam's story foreshadows Christ's role: just as Adam's one act affected all humanity, Jesus' one act of obedience and redemption would affect all who trust in him. Paul is building the case that we're all caught in something larger than ourselves, which is exactly why we need the grace he's been describing throughout this letter.
