Romans 4:11
“He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.”
What does Romans 4:11 mean?
Abraham received circumcision as a physical mark that confirmed something already true about him: he trusted God, and that trust made him right with God. The passage is saying that his circumcision was a seal or stamp of approval on faith that existed before the ceremony itself. What makes this powerful is that Paul uses Abraham's story to show us that righteousness (being right with God) doesn't come from the physical act or ritual. It comes from believing. Abraham was counted as righteous while still uncircumcised, which means his faith, not his flesh, was what mattered. This opens the door for all people, regardless of their background or whether they participate in Jewish practices, to experience the same righteousness through faith. Abraham becomes the spiritual father of everyone who trusts God, not just those who follow particular religious requirements.
