Romans 2:12
“For as many as have sinned without the law will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.”
What does Romans 2:12 mean?
Paul is addressing a tension that might seem unfair: what happens to people who never heard God's law through Scripture? His answer is that everyone is ultimately accountable to God according to the standard they actually knew. Those without access to God's written law aren't judged by it, but they're still answerable for how they lived by their own conscience and reason. Those who had the law, though, are measured against that fuller revelation they received. The deeper point is that no one gets a free pass regardless of their circumstances. Whether you had much knowledge of God's will or little, you'll give account for how you lived with what you actually knew. This is meant to comfort rather than condemn: it suggests God judges fairly, taking your actual situation into account rather than holding you responsible for something you genuinely never had access to.
