Romans 16:17

Now I beg you, brothers, look out for those who are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and turn away from them.

What does Romans 16:17 mean?

Paul is wrapping up his letter with a caring but firm warning: watch out for people whose teaching or behavior pulls your community apart and leads others away from what they've already learned about Jesus. He's not talking about disagreement over minor matters, but about those whose influence actively damages people's faith and fractures the church's unity. When he says "turn away from them," he means take it seriously enough to create some distance. This isn't about being unkind or refusing to help someone change course, but about protecting yourself and others from the kind of influence that quietly erodes belief and creates conflict. It's the posture of someone who loves his friends and knows that bad teaching spreads like a leak in a boat.
