Romans 15:12
“Again, Isaiah says, “There will be the root of Jesse, he who arises to rule over the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles will hope.””
What does Romans 15:12 mean?
Paul quotes Isaiah here to show that God's plan to include all nations, not just Israel, was never an afterthought. Jesse was King David's father, so "the root of Jesse" points to a descendant of David, which early Christians understood as Jesus. The beautiful part is that this ruler wouldn't just reign over his own people—the Gentiles (non-Jewish people) would find hope in him too. Paul uses this Old Testament promise to encourage both Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome that they belong together in God's family, united by faith in Jesus rather than divided by ancestry or background.
