Romans 14:4
“Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand.”
What does Romans 14:4 mean?
Paul is addressing a tension in the early church: some believers were judging others for how they observed dietary laws and holy days. He's asking a simple but piercing question: what gives you the right to judge someone else's faith choices? That servant—the person you're judging—answers to God alone, not to you. The beautiful reassurance here is that God has the power to sustain people in their faith, even when we can't see how they're doing it right. Whether someone "stands or falls" in their spiritual life is ultimately God's work, not ours. This doesn't mean anything goes or that we abandon conviction, but it does mean we release the burden of being the judge of other people's hearts. When you find yourself criticizing how someone else follows Jesus, this verse invites you to step back and trust that God knows what he's doing with them, just as he knows what he's doing with you.
