Romans 14:22
“Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who doesn’t judge himself in that which he approves.”
What does Romans 14:22 mean?
Paul is speaking here to people who feel confident about their choices before God, and he's saying something surprisingly generous: keep that assurance between you and God rather than flaunting it or using it to prove a point. The second part adds the real wisdom—genuine happiness comes when your conscience is clear about what you're doing, when you're not secretly doubting yourself even as you're doing it. This was written to a church divided over eating meat sacrificed to idols and keeping Jewish laws. Some believers felt free to eat anything; others thought it was wrong. Paul's point isn't that conviction doesn't matter—it absolutely does—but that maturity means acting from genuine inner conviction, not from pride or peer pressure. If you're doing something while judging yourself for doing it, you've lost the peace that comes with real faith.
