Romans 14:2
“One man has faith to eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables.”
What does Romans 14:2 mean?
Paul is addressing a real tension in the early church between those who felt completely free to eat meat (possibly meat that had been offered to idols in pagan temples) and those whose conscience wouldn't allow it. Rather than declaring one group right and shaming the other, he's saying both approaches come from genuine faith, just at different maturity levels or with different convictions. The point isn't really about vegetables versus meat. It's about recognizing that people come to faith from different backgrounds and with different scruples, and that's okay. Someone eating only vegetables isn't weak in their relationship with God, but they are being cautious with their conscience. Paul's real concern, which unfolds in the verses that follow, is that those with more freedom don't look down on those who are more careful, and vice versa. He's asking the community to make space for different levels of comfort and conviction.
