What does Romans 12:18 mean?
Paul is acknowledging something real: you won't always be able to make peace happen, because peace requires two people, and sometimes the other person won't cooperate. But that's not an excuse. What matters is your part, the effort and attitude you actually control. He's calling you to exhaust your own capacity for gentleness, honesty, and reconciliation before concluding a relationship is hopeless. This is especially comforting when you're grieving a broken relationship or conflict that won't heal. You can do your work, speak truthfully, offer grace, and still have someone reject you. That's not your failure. But Paul wants you to know the difference between "I couldn't fix this" and "I didn't try," and to live with the first kind of peace rather than the guilt of the second.
