Romans 11:18
“don’t boast over the branches. But if you boast, it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you.”
What does Romans 11:18 mean?
Paul is speaking to non-Jewish believers who've been grafted into God's family tree, and he's gently warning them against spiritual pride. The "branches" are both Jewish and non-Jewish followers of God, and the "root" is God's covenant faithfulness that goes back centuries before anyone reading this letter was born. He's saying something we all need to hear: whatever spiritual blessings or confidence we have don't come from our own strength or superiority. We're dependent on something far older and deeper than ourselves, something we didn't create and can't sustain on our own. When we start feeling like we've earned our way or chosen better than others, we've forgotten that we're being held up by grace, not the other way around. This matters especially when you're in a community or tradition you love, or when you feel you've figured something out spiritually. The reminder here is that humility and gratitude protect us from the kind of arrogance that damages relationships and distances us from God.
