Romans 11:10
“Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see. Bow down their back always.””
What does Romans 11:10 mean?
Paul is quoting an Old Testament prayer of lament to describe what happens when people persistently reject God's message. The "darkening of eyes" and "bowing of backs" aren't arbitrary punishments, but rather the natural spiritual consequences of turning away from light and truth, the way someone who refuses to open their eyes stays in darkness. This is part of Paul's wrestling with a painful question: if Jesus is the Messiah, why didn't most of Israel accept him? His answer includes this quote to suggest that some hardness of heart becomes self-reinforcing, a kind of spiritual consequence. When people close themselves off to God's grace over time, they can become increasingly unable to recognize or receive it.
